Scarne on Card Tricks John Scarne
Publisher: Dover Publications

He taught me a lot of card tricks and told me stories of the great magicians of the good old days. Las Vegas Leaper (from Volume 1) is one of my favorite tricks. This version needlessly uses a double backer in order to switch out the bum card. Scarne on Card Tricks is also a great book, full of self-working gems. The combined value of its contents, were the tricks to be computed at their original marketed price, was in the thousands of dollars. Now I fully realise that card magic is not everyone's cup of tea. Scarne, the world's number-one card wizard, reworked 155 classic card tricks to eliminate the need for sleight-of-hand. For the most part it is practiced as a close up art by amateur and semi professional magicians. Spread the deck to show it normal and ask a spectator to thoroughly shuffle it. This is a one-ahead card matching effect along the same lines as Scarne's 'Calling the Cards' from Scarne on Card Tricks (no mention). Magician, card sharp, died in 1985, wrote that book in 1966. Now you can have it for a few bucks. I have Scarne's Card Tricks on my bedside table, and it still took me nearly all the crosses to tease him out. This is a nice, self-working card trick I first learned from reading John Scarne's 'Scarne on Card Tricks'. This Dover reprint is one of the best values in magic. However, Hugard does devote a chapter describing important card sleights. My favorite of these was about John Scarne. The book I pulled was 'Scarne on Card Tricks'.
